Week 2: Matchup Analysis

Sask Roughriders @ Ottawa RedBlacks

Trevor Harris will take the field for the first time this season as the RedBlacks host the Roughriders. Harris went through a scary moment in pre-season but looks to be healthy enough to start Week 2. Saskatchewan gave up close to 20 FPTS to Toronto last week. I expect Trevor Harris to be able to top that.
For Zach Collaros, he has the opportunity to win his second in a row, in a long time. Not the greatest Fantasy Performance in Week 1 but I’ll be looking to see him have a stronger passing game as the season progresses.

In the backfields, I am looking for William Powell to build off a great year last year. Sask gave up over 23 FPTS to backs last week. I’m starting William Powell.
For Saskatchewan, Jerome Messam led the way with 21 carries last week, to Tre Mason’s 5. Messam looks to be a good start if he continues to see this usage.

Diontae Spencer, Greg Ellingson, Brad Sinopoli. I don’t need to Captain Obvious this, do I?
For Saskatchewan Receivers, an extremely talent-loaded group, they didn’t exactly have a huge week 1. Carter led targets followed by Roosevelt, but no receiver scored more than 9 standard FPTS. A bit disappointing and I definitely look for the entire core to improve moving forward. A big note for Week 2, Duron Carter won’t be playing offense. Looks like he’s playing corner only.

Winnipeg BlueBombers @ Montreal Alouettes

Winnipeg is in Montreal on Friday night. Chris Streveler looked decent for the Bombers, against a pretty weak Edmonton Defense. He looks to be an OK value play in Daily Fantasy. I expect to see his passing numbers rise as he gets more reps.
And then we have Drew Willy. I think he’s full of talent but the rest of the team around him doesn’t help much. Only 14 FPTS last week isn’t really getting the job done. Against an improved Winnipeg D I can’t recommend this start.

Let’s just start Andrew Harris, OK? I think Winnipeg will be looking to chew up the clock once they get a lead in this game. Some good Harris usage will happen.
Despite my outlook for Montreal, I think Tyrell Sutton isn’t a terrible play. He almost got us 10 FPTS in the losing effort last week. With so many other RB positions up in the air, at least we know Sutton will have the lead opportunity.

Bluebombers receivers got on the board much more than I expected in Week 1. Dressler and Adams both gave up double-digit performances. If Streveler can keep finding these guys for Touchdowns, start them! I really hope Bowman can get things rolling too, but I’m going to have to see some points from him before I’ll trust the start.
It’s been too long since Chris Williams was Fantasy relevant, but I see him as a dark horse in this matchup. And I’ll go Eugene Lewis as a smart sleeper play for the week.

Hamilton Ti-Cats @ Edmonton Eskimos

Hamilton has a touch schedule to start the season, playing a lot of West teams to get things going. I think Masoli has a great opportunity here against an Edmonton Defense that pales in comparison to their former selves.
Mike Reilly is a monster. I don’t think I have to write up much about him.

Alex Green will miss Week 2 as well, so Hamilton’s backfield situation doesn’t look good. Again. Last week both Timmis and Whitlock COMBINED for 8 carries, 2 receptions and under 5 FPTS. You want a deeeeeep sleeeeper pick? John White signed. Revenge game?
And then we have CJ Gable. So much talent, power, opportunity… only for Reilly to be scoring the TDs himself. It will be a gamble every week with this start. I’d save the starts for later in the year when Reilly ( might ) start slowing down.

So if Hamilton isn’t running the ball, they must be throwing it, right? Mike Jones and Jalen Saunders both gave us double-digit FPTS last week and over 100 receiving yards each. Banks did not have a great game and Tasker was merely adequate.  Terrence Toliver returns this week. Mike Jones moves to boundry side SB. Get him in your lineup!
For Edmonton, Derel Walker was far and away the best receiver, 23 FPTS. Next best was Jamill Smith with 9 FPTS and most of that is special teams returns. For Week 2, Jamill Smith lands on the 6-game IR, so watch for a new PR, KR guy. I still have confidence that Vidal Hazelton will be a part of the offense, and Duke Williams will continue to make crazy big plays. – This just in, Vidal Hazelton has been tagged Doubtful for this weekend. – This also just in, Miles Shuler will get teh start at Field Side WR and will be handling Punt and Kick return duty. Perhaps a sleeper value pick there.

Calgary Stampeders @ Toronto Argos

Bo Levi Mitchell has already run for as many yards as he scrambled for all of last season. Is this a new trend? I doubt it. I think he’s a decent start in this week as he’ll get plenty of time on the field.
Ricky Ray, on the other hand, I can’t recommend as a start. Calgary is arguably the best Defense in the league, and James Franklin is vulturing all the FPTS.

So what is the deal with Calgary’s backfield? Last week Dave Dickinson told us they’d ride the hot hand. I guess that was Don Jackson, who out-touched Terry Williams 12 carries to 7. He was the more effective runner. Will Week 2 follow suit? Stay tuned!
I think pretty much everybody had James Wilder Jr in their lineup for Week 1, only to be a bit disappointed as Declan Cross got the major score. He still put up 8.4 FPTS and I see him building on this week after week.

Targets galore for Calgary receivers. Last week saw over 7 targets to each of Marken Mitchel, Kamar Jorden and DaVaris Daniels. Start these guys against this Toronto D.
12 targets for SJ Green in Week 1 turned out to be less than 4 FPTS. Disappointing but he’ll turn that around. Just maybe not against Calgary.
