Ottawa RedBlacks @ Calgary Stampeders
This could be the game of the week. I can see this going two ways.
Trevor Harris put aside any doubts we may have had regarding his health. He was able to throw over 340 yards and two majors against, what was suppose to be, a solid Sask defense. Can he do the same against what we know is a solid Calgary defense? This early in the year I’m going to watch this one with great interest but I’m not starting Trevor.
We saw a couple very different games out of Bo Levi so far this season. His opener against Hamilton was nothing to write home about, but his performance in Week 2 against Toronto will solidify Bo in many people’s fantasy lineups. Ottawa, having played only one, one-sided game against SSK so far currently ranks THE BEST against QBs so far this year. But I expect Bo to do just fine.
Powell looks great on paper as well, having had a monster game against Sask. I think his stats will average out against after a mediocre showing against this Calgary Defense. Temper expectations.
Calgary’s backfield continues to be a two-headed monster. 21 to 19 carries split almost dead even between Don Jackson and Terry Williams. Jackson seems to be the more explosive runner and takes bigger advantage of his opportunities, but I can only recommend the start if his salary continues to be low.
I don’t think I need to hype up Ellingson, Spencer and Sinopoli. You know you’re starting these guys. Just let me play a bit of devil’s advocate first… Calgary gives us the FEWEST fantasy points to Wide Receivers so far in the early season… yeah, you’re still starting these guys.
On the other hand, Ottawa gave up almost 40 FPTS to receivers in their opener. This makes things look good for the Calgary receivers. But who do you go with? Bo really spreads the ball around, everyone gets opportunities. Based on the numbers alone, my preference would be Rogers, Jorden, Daniels. In that order.
Winnipeg BlueBombers @ Hamilton Ti-Cats
This could be the game of the week. Wait, did I already say that? Seriously the way this game plays out I feel like it is setting up to be a barn-burner. Which is always fun for Fantasy!
First of all, we’ve got Streveler. He was usable as a Fantasy QB in Week 1, and was an AMAZING Fantasy QB in Week 2, scoring over 37 FPTS. Granted, it was against a lowly Montreal Defense. This week he’ll go up against a perfectly average Hamilton D. If you can get him for a decent salary, let’s go Strevs!
Masoli on the other side of the ball is giving Hamilton’s brass no reason to be looking to the sideline for Johnny. Almost 30 FPTS last week in Edmonton, throwing three TDs and rushing for 60 yards. I like those kind of numbers for Fantasy as well. Winnipeg gives up the 4th most FPTS to QBs.
In Winnipeg’s backfield, Andrew Harris has over 200 combined yards in his two first games. 9 total receptions if you’re scoring PPR. Get him in your lineup against this Hamilton Defense giving up an average of almost 18 FPTS to backfields.
As for Hamilton’s running game… an absolute wasteland in Week 1, only to have Mercer Timmis run all over the Eskimos with 133 yards and a pair of scores. How can you predict this one? Yikes. Are we going to see John White yet? And Alex Green could be coming back as well. Avoid the uncertainty.
If Darvin Adams keeps throwing TDs, I want him in my lineup. Unfortunately we can’t count on that. So I’m going for a value pick here, Wolitarsky was a college room mate of Streveler. They seem to have found some chemistry.
Mike Jones was kept off the stats sheet last week, but Banks and Tasker lit it up! Terrence Toliver saw some good opportunities in his first game back. These guys will be going up against the 4th best D against receivers, giving up just under 35 FPTS to the WR position per game.
BC Lions @ Edmonton Eskimos
This could be the game of the week… ok stop it.
But really interested to see Jennings in his second game of the season. He was OK in his opener, but goes up against an Edmonton Defense currently ranked 2nd last against opposing QBs. A real opportunity for the Lions to gain some momentum in the West.
On the other side of the ball we have Mike Reilly. If you’re spending the salary, you know what you’re getting.
In Week 1, BC backfield was all Jeremiah Johnson, there was no tandem with Rutley as some expected. If this continues, Johnson becomes a viable start every week, despite a relatively slow Week 1. Edmonton is merely average against backfields.
And I’m pretty much saying the same thing again this week for CJ Gable. Reilly is stealing all his opportunity. Hard to recommend the start until we get to see more goal-line usage from him.
Here’s where Jennings could really shine. Edmonton is currently giving up the MOST FPTS to Wide Receivers. I want to get Arceneaux and Burnham in my lineups this week.
And what can I really say about Edmonton receivers? Derel Walker is in your lineup, league leader. Duke Williams is still offering a competitive Salary given his performance and opportunity. Bryant looks to make his return, Hazelton is still out.
Montreal Alouettes @ Sask Roughriders
This could be the game of the… no, it won’t. But it will still be interesting.
Montreal isn’t really a good enough team to have much Fantasy impact, outside of Tyrel Sutton. Willy just isn’t getting enough done on the field to make himself or his receivers very valuable. We’ll see if Adams Jr can light a fire under his ass.
However, what is interesting is that we may have a great sleeper option at QB here. With Collaros out, Brandon Bridge is an attractive option. Low salary and he gets things done on his feet. That equals Fantasy Points! If he’s starting the game, I’m starting him in my lineup.
Jerome Messam also looks to be a risky Fantasy option for Week 3. Normally a back going up against Montreal would be an easy start. There’s just too many mouths to feed. Watch for Tre Mason AND Marcus Thigpen to steal some touches. Mason currently sees a bit less than half of Messam’s usage, who wasn’t overly effective last week. Thigpen looks to have the starting role on the depth chart.
Will Duron Carter play some Receiver this week? Doesn’t sound like it. Roosevelt disappointed in Week 2 but I wouldn’t expect that to be a trend.
